6 | Tissue-only donation

Healthcare Professionals

Tissue-only donation (eye tissue, heart valves and skin) may be possible after death when organ donation does not go ahead. Tissue-only donation is possible for patients who die outside of the ICU e.g. the emergency department or in general wards.

Tissue donation can be undertaken up to 48 hours after death.

Patients of any age may be able to donate tissue. ODNZ assists with the assessment and organisation of tissue-only donation.

Please contact the ODNZ donor coordinator if you require further information on this process.
