Organ allocation

Before organs are allocated to a recipient, there are a number of factors that are considered by the transplant units. These can include:

  • blood group

  • tissue typing

  • height and weight compatibility

  • medical urgency

  • time on the waiting list

Organs are only retrieved if there is a suitable recipient on the waiting list.
