Who can donate?

People of all ages can now be considered for donation. At the time of death the age and medical condition of the person will determine the organs and tissues that can be donated.

Very few medical conditions will prevent a person from being able to donate. For example, a person with severe asthma may not be able to donate lungs for transplantation but may be able to donate heart, liver, kidneys and eyes.

It is important to understand that the very strict conditions that might prevent you from donating blood may not apply to organ donation and eye donation. For example, those people who have lived in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland or France for more than six months between 1980 and 1996 cannot donate blood, heart valves and skin but are able to donate organs and eyes for transplantation.

For those people who have cancer or who have been treated for cancer in the past, donation might still be possible. The type of cancer, the treatment, and the time since the treatment will determine if donation is possible. Most commonly, eye donation can be considered for people with cancer or who have been treated for cancer in the past.
